Jewelry Show to Benefit Humane Society
Dazzl Jewelry from Atlanta is sponsoring a jewelry show with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Humane Society of Camden County. The event will be held on Friday, July 9 11-6 PM and Saturday, July 10 from 10-3 PM at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall (100 Conyers Street), in Downtown St. Marys. Cash and credit cards accepted.

Starry Nights
Don't miss the July edition of Starry Nights featuring Lisa Allen's Dance Works (a fun filled evening of dance and a "Back to School Fashion Show"). Performance date is July 10th beginning at 7 PM at the Howard Gilman Waterfront Park. For info call 912-882-4000.

Display at Olde Towne Gallery
Camden ceramist Jeanne N. Henry, recent Georgia Southern grad, has a flair for beautifully designed functional pottery. She likes to share a love of her art by making it useful as well as decorative, and her work will be displayed at Olde Towne Gallery, 304 Osborne Street in downtown St. Marys throughout July. Come in for a latte at Cedar Oak Cafe and leave with a handsculpted mug or pot from the gallery.

A little something you can do to help with the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico...
The Audubon team in the Gulf has asked the St. Marys EarthKeepers to help spread the word that the preservation and upkeep of green spaces is vital at this time - as is supplying bird food. Millions of migratory birds pass through the affected Gulf area on their way to nesting and breeding grounds across North America and they will seek areas of safety. It is thought that our region will see an influx of these species. (The brown pelican, roseate spoonbill, American oyster-catcher, reddish egret, red knot, royal tern, snowy plover, seaside sparrow and clapper rail are of particular concern).

(The Canadian government also requests that people be particularly alert for such species as the loons, the piping plover and others who may have ingested toxic ingredients in the Gulf and are then found in GA. Legal international action against BP is underway for the criminal violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act).

Please alert the Coastal Georgia Audubon Society (912-638-3986) or The Louisiana Chapter (225-768-0820) with any reports of deceased, unusual or suffering birds. Fill your feeders if you have them - milk cartons can be used to create them if you do not - and watch carefully.

I know that we all wish to be more proactive during this disaster, but small things can make a profound difference to so many species in peril.

A USTA Jr. Tennis Tournament was held Saturday, May 22nd at the Yulee High
School Athletic Complex. The tournament was sponsored by the Yulee Tennis
Foundation, coached by Michelle and Vishnu Maharaj. There were 28 total
competitors from Nassau County and surrounding areas. Congratulations to one
of our 11-year old CrossFitters from the Yulee team, Emma Clare Godfrey, for
placing 2nd overall! The winner was Kelsey Johnson, 16, who attends
Fernandina Beach High School.

We now have over 100 volunteers who have signed on to pitch in if needed (some of whom are willing to go to the Gulf should we be called to do so). In the next week or so, the GaVOAD will supply us with the necessary HAZWOPER information - and the Gulf agencies with whom we are registered as volunteers are in constant contact as they assess the situation and set up training camps.

Oceanographic and meteorological experts can only "guesstimate" as to the possibility of the slick entering the Gulf Loop current...

Many experts maintain that it is not an "if" scenario, but "when"...
"If the slick contacts the so-called Loop sea current, the oily sheen could eventually be carried to Miami in southern Florida, or as far as North Carolina's barrier islands, warned Robert Weisberg, a physical oceanographer at the University of South Florida. "Exactly when the oil will enter the Loop Current at the surface is unknown, but it appears to be imminent," Weisberg said, referring to the prevailing current in the Gulf."

Should the worse happen - the oil and disperants become caught in the Gulf Loop - it will be an "all hands on deck" situation for Cumberland Island and the most pressing need at that point will be to clear the 17 miles of beaches of all man-made and natural debris (in order to facilitate more effective clean-up). But we, as a community, are blessed by willing hands and we will be as prepared as it is possible to be.

I thank you...and ask for your patience and prayers. I know that so many are aching to help in some way now, but we must let nature dictate our actions and wait for the knowledgeable agencies in the Gulf (and our own state) to direct us. I shan't burden your inboxes with up-dates as we all watch and wait but I will, most assuredly, contact you all if the "worst-case-scenario" occurs.

Fernandina Beach, FL, 2/11/10 - Amelia River Cruises will offer a unique sailing opportunity giving access to White Oak Conservation Center's "A Celebration of White Oak" fundraising event, scheduled for Sunday, March 7th, from 12-4 p.m.

Amelia River Cruises will depart out of Fernandina Harbor Marina on Sunday, March 7, at 9 a.m., picking up additional passengers at St. Marys, Georgia in 10 a.m., arriving at White Oak approximately 12:30 p.m. Return transportation will be provided by Coastal Georgia Charters and Tours via shuttle bus. All inclusive transportation cost is $50 plus sales tax of 7%.

Seating for this special sail is limited and reservations are required. Interested passengers must reserve seating for the sail directly with the Amelia River Cruises office by calling Lori Hoerl, Director of Marketing and Operations, at 904-491-7617 or via email at lorbell1@aol.com. Tickets for the White Oak Event must be purchased from White Oak Conservation Center directly.

The sail up to White Oak will be hosted by owner, Captain Kevin McCarthy, with views of Amelia Island, Cumberland Island, St. Mary, Georgia and the wildlife seen along the way. An historical narration will be provide by Kevin, a local captain/historian who has lived in the area for over 40 years.

White Oak's unique experience will offer guests the opportunity to see and learn about some of the magnificent wildlife at White Oak, including the elusive okapi and the Grevy's zebra.

The Celebration highlighted event will offer specialized tours of the Conservation Center, presentations from staff and a delicious lunch along the St. Marys River. An exciting silent auction will include once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, including behind-the-scenes experiences at White Oak Conservation Center.
Space is limited for the event. Tickets are offered at $150 per person and are available by calling 904-225-3396 or visiting www.wocenter.org/events. Of the $150 ticket price, $75 is tax-deductible.
White Oak Conservation Center is one of the world's premiere wildlife breeding, research, and training facilities. All funds raised at "A Celebration of White Oak" will go directly to funding wildlife conservation programs.

New Sales Manager Has Over 20 Years of Hospitality Experience

Kingsland, Georgia - October 8, 2009 -
Kingsland Convention & Visitors Bureau (KCVB) proudly announces the addition of a new member to its sales team. Working under the direction of KCVB Director of Marketing Janelle Kjensmo, Ms. Dawn Roberts joined the team on September 30, 2009 as the new Sales Manager. Together, Kjensmo and Roberts will cultivate a new level of interest with group tour planners and leisure travel groups to bring additional overnight stays to Kingsland. In addition to assisting in outside sales reach, group travel planning, and representing Kingsland at trade shows, both Janelle and Dawn will continue to work closely with local hotel, restaurant and retail hospitality partners in maintaining business rapport.

Dawn Roberts, a former graduate of Camden County High, recently relocated back to Camden County to be closer to family. Dawn's background in the hospitality industry is derived from her position as a sales manager for both Radisson and Holiday Inn hotels, as well as holding the position of National Sales Manager for a distinguished resort and spa in Michigan. Throughout her 20 years of experience, Dawn has gained extensive experience in working at tradeshows, coordinating group travel, business meetings and conventions, and welcoming guests to the hotel. In her new position, Dawn will be responsible for planning, directing, managing and executing the outside sales function for the KCVB.
"Dawn brings the department over two decades of experience and networking contacts in the hospitality industry," said Tonya Rosado, Director of the KCVB. "Her enthusiasm about sales and knowledge of the industry are a huge asset in developing relationships with key outside partners in bringing additional tourism revenues to Kingsland."

In her first few weeks on the job, Dawn will be traveling to North Carolina to represent Kingsland at the Annual AAA Travel Conference. AAA Travel Conference is an annual gathering of AAA travel counselors and staff to learn what new offers are available as well as new things to sell to their members. This tradeshow will allow Dawn to meet with over a hundred AAA travel counselors and provide visitor information that they can take back to their offices and pass on to their membership.

"The addition of a sales manager allows us to expand our strategic sales tactics with the promotion and increased exposure to the group tour market and trade shows," said Janelle Kjensmo, Marketing Director for the KCVB. "Our goal is for Kingsland's hotels to see an increase in overnight stays and I believe with Dawn's experience and individual talent we will see results!"

SPIRITS TO STIR DURING HAUNTED HISTORY TOUR OCTOBER 30, 2009

ST. MARYS, GA—A headless pirate, a yellow fever victim, the village dog, and the last man hanged in Camden County—these are some of the spirits that will tell their stories on October 30, 2009 during the St. Marys Downtown Merchants Association’s MAGICAL HAUNTED HISTORY TOUR.

Melding the mysteries of All Hallows’ Eve with true stories of yesteryear, professional and amateur storytellers will hold court at ten noteworthy locations throughout the Historic District of St. Marys. The “tellers” will be fully costumed in their respective time periods that span hundreds of years of the rich history surrounding Coastal Georgia’s southernmost town.

Complimentary divining rods will be given to all tour participants with instructions on how to detect hidden graves on the outskirts of St. Marys’ historic Oak Grove Cemetery. With soldiers from every major war buried there (beginning with the Revolutionary War), the cemetery is home to many legends that have endured through the ages including the mysterious Resurrection Angel who will have stories of her own to tell.

Volunteers from the St. Marys Golf Cart Association (stationed at Orange Hall) will transport guests (who need assistance) by golf cart from story site to story site—a route which is easily walkable. Stories and spirits include: Orange Hall—Little Jane, The Clark House (where Aaron Burr came after his deadly dual with Alexander Hamilton), the MarshWalk (the headless pirate from the old Ross Inn), Bachlott House, the Historic Riverview Hotel (Beggar, the village dog), The Goodbread House (Captain Goodbread), and the old city jail (the last man hanged in Camden County).

The tour begins at 6:00 p.m. and will culminate at a haunted house exhibit hosted by Joseph and Terra Lucent at the newly opened 304 Osborne Place.

Maureen Barry (who will appear as Beggar, the village dog), an author and professional storyteller, is coordinating the tour with the National Park Service and members of the St. Marys Downtown Merchants Association. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $8 at the St. Marys Welcome Center and Once Upon a Bookseller, or for $10 on the day of the event at the Welcome Center. THE BIG READ

Introducing “The Big Read”, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), dedicated to bring literacy to the forefront of American culture once again. The St. Marys Public Library has joined in partnership with the Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association, Three Rivers Regional Library System as well as many others across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. With the ever-expanding power of the World Wide Web reading has taken a severe downward turn among all demographics but particularly the decline is most noted among the youth of America. “The Big Read” is addressing this public literacy crisis with a proactive response introducing and rejuvenating the joy of the written word.

“The Big Read” program will last approximately one month with a vast array of programs intended to provide everyone with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. The

St. Marys Public Library in conjunction with other regional libraries has selected “A Tribute to Edgar Allen Poe” in keeping with traditional October theme. The kick-off event in St. Marys will be held October 10th, 10am-12pm joining the ever-popular Hay Days Event “Build-A-Scarecrow”. Be sure to stop by the St. Marys Library tent on the grounds of Orange Hall to learn more about the events yet to come. Local author Valerie Evans Goddard will be on hand by the fountain at Orange Hall sharing spooky stories to entertain the children. Be sure to reserve your “Build-A-Scarecrow” kit through the St. Marys Downtown Development Authority at 400 Osborne Street or call (912) 882-8111 for further information.

Other events scheduled to promote “The Big Read” are:

Tuesday, October 13th, The Scarecrow Stroll will begin at the St Marys Economic Development Building 400 Osborne Street from 5pm-7pm. In keeping with the spooky theme of Poe’s writing, the time honored classic cartoons of “Casper the Friendly Ghost” will be shown continually for the children complete with popcorn. This will be one of the many great stops on the Hay Ride held that evening while everyone enjoys the myriad of scarecrows on display. The St. Marys Library Board will be set-up out front to distribute bookmarks and other fun materials to promote this very worthy project.

Friday, October 16th, “An evening with Edgar Allen Poe” will commence at 7pm at Orange Hall,

311 Osborne Street, St. Marys. A book discussion on the works of Edgar Allen Poe will be held in depths of Orange Hall’s lower level led by local writer and storyteller Dr. Christina Johns. Edgar Allen Poe and his beloved Annabel Lee (portrayed by students from the Fine Arts Department of Camden High School) will present the Poe poem “Annabel Lee” in full costume. At the conclusion, local Author Valerie Evans Goddard will conduct the St. Marys Spirits Tour through the historic district of St. Marys to reveal some of the more alternative history, this will be a riding tour. More than one tour may be scheduled depending on participation.

Sunday, October 25th, Dinner and a Movie will wrap up “The Big Read” at Captain Seagle’s Seafood Restaurant and Saloon, 105 Osborne Street, St. Marys. The evening will begin with a wonderful buffet meal at 6pm. The movie presented will be the classic Alfred Hitchcock picture, “The Birds”. There will be a dessert and coffee bar presented during the movie as well as popcorn for those who simply must have buttery fingers to enjoy a movie. The entire “Dinner and a Movie” package will be $20 per person. Edgar Allen Poe and Annabel Lee will be guests for the evening.

ST. MARYS CELEBRATES HAY DAYS

As the days grow shorter, the leaves begin to turn the muted colors of red, gold, and orange and every lawn has great piles of endless falling leaves. The scent of burning foliage permeates the air and you can almost taste the spicy flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg on your tongue. Fall has once again come to St. Marys. We begin the celebration of the harvest season with our annual “Hay Days”. The fun filled family events will kick-off October 10th and continue through October 31st.

The amusement begins for kids of all ages with Build-A-Scarecrow. The first of the Hay Days events will take place at Orange Hall where a kit with everything you need to make the perfect Scarecrow will be available for $20. Just the right place for your unique Scarecrow will be selected downtown and there he or she will stand ready to welcome everyone downtown.

The quaint downtown district of St. Marys will be transformed into a beautiful fall display. Storefronts and historic homes emblazoned with pumpkins, scarecrows, hay bales and flowering potted mums will enhance the harvest season scene. Local businesses and organizations will be creating scarecrows to enhance the median of Osborne Street. Try to guess which Scarecrow goes with each business or group downtown along the Scarecrow Stroll on October 13th.

The annual festivities will continue by encouraging families to come to downtown in costume that evening to view the scarecrows, visit the merchants for special treats and participate in hay rides, movies and more all at no cost.

Hay Days is enjoyable for everyone, surely an event not to be missed. “In the South fall is slow to start. Hay Days invites fall into our downtown with all the traditions of pumpkins, scarecrows and fall colors”, said Alyce Thornhill, Director of the St. Marys Downtown Development Authority.

St. Marys Conference Room meets Federal Standards for Meeting Space

For the past three weeks the St. Marys Economic Development Conference Room has been the site of Captain John Scotts First Coast Maritime (FCM) licensing class. First Coast Maritime LLC offers quality maritime training and instruction for a variety of licenses issued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG). FCM has obtained USCG approval for the St. Marys Economic Development Center facilities, allowing licensing courses to be taught at the facility. Students are also tested at the site, and the diploma issued by FCM for successful completion of a program may be submitted to the USCG to obtain certain licenses. FCM offers courses from the basic Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel certification – commonly referred to as a “six pack license” to more advanced professional maritime licenses and training. With class schedules of up to two weeks, the students attending classes with FCM make a substantial contribution to the local economy. The company also offers post military career counseling for active duty members of the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard, demonstrating how the active duty sea service can be used in the Merchant Marine setting, from service on commercial ships to operating a small fishing charter.

Captain Scott had these words to share about the conference facility available through city. “When you are in need of a meeting facility for your business, there are two main challenges: finding the right facility to meet your specific needs and finding the best establishment and professional staff to work with. St. Marys Economic Development Center has become our anchor to the successful execution of conducting USCG Federal Licensing classes.”

Alyce Thornhill, Director of Economic Development agrees that this is an asset to our City. Leasing the conference room not only brings funds into the city it also keeps activity in our Downtown; these students support local businesses on breaks during the long sessions. “It is an initiative of our Economic Development Committee to attract and recruit more opportunities like this for the conference space, our room will easily hold 50 people and has all the amenities for hosting conferences, classes, workshops and planning sessions.
