Jewelry Show to Benefit Humane Society
Dazzl Jewelry from Atlanta is sponsoring a jewelry show with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Humane Society of Camden County. The event will be held on Friday, July 9 11-6 PM and Saturday, July 10 from 10-3 PM at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall (100 Conyers Street), in Downtown St. Marys. Cash and credit cards accepted.
Starry Nights
Don't miss the July edition of Starry Nights featuring Lisa Allen's Dance Works (a fun filled evening of dance and a "Back to School Fashion Show"). Performance date is July 10th beginning at 7 PM at the Howard Gilman Waterfront Park. For info call 912-882-4000.

Display at Olde Towne Gallery
Camden ceramist Jeanne N. Henry, recent Georgia Southern grad, has a flair for beautifully designed functional pottery. She likes to share a love of her art by making it useful as well as decorative, and her work will be displayed at Olde Towne Gallery, 304 Osborne Street in downtown St. Marys throughout July. Come in for a latte at Cedar Oak Cafe and leave with a handsculpted mug or pot from the gallery.
A little something you can do to help with the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico...
The Audubon team in the Gulf has asked the St. Marys EarthKeepers to help spread the word that the preservation and upkeep of green spaces is vital at this time - as is supplying bird food. Millions of migratory birds pass through the affected Gulf area on their way to nesting and breeding grounds across North America and they will seek areas of safety. It is thought that our region will see an influx of these species. (The brown pelican, roseate spoonbill, American oyster-catcher, reddish egret, red knot, royal tern, snowy plover, seaside sparrow and clapper rail are of particular concern).
(The Canadian government also requests that people be particularly alert for such species as the loons, the piping plover and others who may have ingested toxic ingredients in the Gulf and are then found in GA. Legal international action against BP is underway for the criminal violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act).
Please alert the Coastal Georgia Audubon Society (912-638-3986) or The Louisiana Chapter (225-768-0820) with any reports of deceased, unusual or suffering birds. Fill your feeders if you have them - milk cartons can be used to create them if you do not - and watch carefully.
I know that we all wish to be more proactive during this disaster, but small things can make a profound difference to so many species in peril.

A USTA Jr. Tennis Tournament was held Saturday, May 22nd at the Yulee High
School Athletic Complex. The tournament was sponsored by the Yulee Tennis
Foundation, coached by Michelle and Vishnu Maharaj. There were 28 total
competitors from Nassau County and surrounding areas. Congratulations to one
of our 11-year old CrossFitters from the Yulee team, Emma Clare Godfrey, for
placing 2nd overall! The winner was Kelsey Johnson, 16, who attends
Fernandina Beach High School.

Once again the citizens of Camden County have answered the call for help and, on behalf of the St. Marys EarthKeepers and our city, I thank you.

We now have over 100 volunteers who have signed on to pitch in if needed (some of whom are willing to go to the Gulf should we be called to do so). In the next week or so, the GaVOAD will supply us with the necessary HAZWOPER information - and the Gulf agencies with whom we are registered as volunteers are in constant contact as they assess the situation and set up training camps.
Oceanographic and meteorological experts can only "guesstimate" as to the possibility of the slick entering the Gulf Loop current...

Many experts maintain that it is not an "if" scenario, but "when"...
"If the slick contacts the so-called Loop sea current, the oily sheen could eventually be carried to Miami in southern Florida, or as far as North Carolina's barrier islands, warned Robert Weisberg, a physical oceanographer at the University of South Florida. "Exactly when the oil will enter the Loop Current at the surface is unknown, but it appears to be imminent," Weisberg said, referring to the prevailing current in the Gulf."

Should the worse happen - the oil and disperants become caught in the Gulf Loop - it will be an "all hands on deck" situation for Cumberland Island and the most pressing need at that point will be to clear the 17 miles of beaches of all man-made and natural debris (in order to facilitate more effective clean-up). But we, as a community, are blessed by willing hands and we will be as prepared as it is possible to be.
I thank you...and ask for your patience and prayers. I know that so many are aching to help in some way now, but we must let nature dictate our actions and wait for the knowledgeable agencies in the Gulf (and our own state) to direct us. I shan't burden your inboxes with up-dates as we all watch and wait but I will, most assuredly, contact you all if the "worst-case-scenario" occurs.
